Siblings | Tulsa Newborn Photographer

Are you a mommy who is expecting baby #2....or #3, or even #4? Welcoming a newborn baby into the home is such a life changing experience for the whole family, especially big brother or big sister. With all the adjustments that come along the way, I feel it is so important to involve siblings in each of the new baby happenings,

including your newborn photo session

 ;)

One aspect of newborn photography that I absolutely LOVE is photographing newborns with their siblings! Not only do I love sibling photography, but I'm the only newborn photographer in my area to specialize in it. People tend to have their babies 18 months to 2 years apart, and it can be it difficult to photograph a young toddler and a newborn together

(click here to learn more about posing newborns with siblings)

.

Most photographers do not want to take on the challenge of these sessions, but this is what sets TG Photography apart from the rest. At a newborn/sibling session you can expect multiple sibling shots and family poses, as well as individuals of the new baby. Scroll down to view more of my latest work with newborns and siblings.

Here are some other activities, pertaining to the new baby, that big brother or big sister might enjoy:

  • tagging along to a doctor's appointment to hear the baby's heartbeat
  • attending a sibling preparation class at the hospital
  • helping pick out a baby name
  • choosing baby's outfit to wear home from the hospital

Color Change Tutorial | Tulsa Newborn Photographer

During a newborn photography session, the goal is to keep the baby asleep. Sometimes instead of changing out the headband, wrap, or hat, I will photoshop the color of the item in order to offer my client a variety of choices.

Do you want to learn how to achieve this look? The Color Change Tutorial is available for purchase here.

Jimenez Family | Beach Session

I have tons of photos from our vacation, but I wanted to share our family beach session first. We did not have another photographer, so we had to improvise. This is a mixture of photos taken by my husband, my step daughter, and myself. I photoshopped us all into the group shots. It was a bit windy and cold, so this is all we got in the 20 minutes we were there. Enjoy!

And here is another compilation of all our snapshots and video clips. Some of the Disneyland group shots in this video were taken by the park photographers.

Do It Yourself Disney Autograph Books/Keepsake Boxes

Warning, this is a personal blog post and has absolutely nothing to do with photography ;)

My family and I are headed off to Disneyland in the morning!!!  Can you tell I'm excited?! Not only will it be our first time to take Averie and Cavin (ages 5 and 3 1/2), but it is my first time to visit California as well. After researching for hours online about "what to do, "what to take", etc, I realized autograph books are a MUST HAVE item for any Disney trip.  Being a full time mom and business owner, I don't have a lot of time for arts and crafts, so I wanted to show you this quick DIY project that I threw together today (yes, the day before we leave...procrastinate much?)

Items you will need:
  • keepsake box from Hobby Lobby or craft store
  • spray paint (or I'm sure any paint will work)
  • wooden decor piece for top of box
  • 4x6 pack of colorful cardstock paper

Optional:
  • Fujifilm Instax camera and film
  • Instax Mini sticker pockets

Directions:
Paint the keepsake box with color of your choice. After box is fully dry, glue decor piece on top. Print a signature line on the card stock and adhere sticker pocket. This is what you will end up with:

Averie and Cavin got to choose their favorite colors for the boxes, along with their favorite wooden piece for the top. You can decorate them more with scrapbook items or stickers, but I like ours clean and simple ;)

My kids are already obsessed with these! They are so excited to meet each of their favorite character's so we can take an instant photo and have them sign a page. I'm not taking the boxes into the park, I'm just putting the paper in a ziplock bag in my backpack. You could even punch a hole and put them on a metal ring to make it easier to carry around. When we return home, I will laminate the pages. What a fun memory for them to bring home...and it took me less than an hour to make!

These are really cute too! That's where I got the idea to use the Instax ;)

Newborn photography with a sibling involved can definitely be quite challenging. I feel it is so important to involve big brother or big sister and make them feel special too. These sweet brothers were perfect little models! Here are just a few of my favorites from this newborn session.

Posing Newborn Babies With Siblings | Tulsa Newborn Photographer

Tulsa Newborn Photographer
Tulsa Newborn Photographer

One of the most challenging aspects of being a newborn photographer is posing the newborn with a sibling. But also this can be the most rewarding shot that you will ever capture! The majority of people tend to have their babies two years apart, so this means 9 times out of 10, you are working with not only a newborn, but also a rambunctious 2 year old toddler. Add in the fact that this toddler's usual routine has just been recently altered with the introduction of a new baby in the home….and well, you can see where this is going.

Some siblings adjust very well to welcoming a new little bundle of joy into their home, unfortunately, some do not. Since you never can anticipate which type you will get, you need to be prepared for anything.

THE NEWBORN BABY'S SAFETY is the most important factor when you are posing them with a young sibling. Here are a few things that you SHOULD NOT do:

  • Do not let the toddler/sibling hold the baby unattended. If that baby gets dropped, squeezed, rolled-on, squished, or slapped (yes, those precious 2 year olds like to slap), then not only will parents be upset with you, they will be upset with the sibling and the tension begins to rise and the whole session will go downhill from there.
  • Do not place the baby and sibling on high surfaces. I try to take all my sibling shots on the ground or have them as close to the ground as possible. Kids get uneasy when they are out of their element. The toddler is already getting nervous about being in an unfamiliar place and interacting with the new baby, I've noticed that if you let them sit or lay on the floor they are more comfortable with the idea. Occasionally I will let the toddler sit in a chair, this is only for the VERY cooperative siblings.
  • Do not force the toddler to do something they don't want to do. All of us mommies know what happens when you try to force your child to do something, it becomes a battle of the wills and never ends well. Instead of telling them what to do, ASK them. For example, "Do you want to kiss the baby".  If they are adamant about not doing it, quickly move on to something else. You can always come back to it later.

COMPOSITE IMAGES are another way to ensure the baby is always safe. If using a prop, place it on the ground first and snap a shot with the toddler sitting next to it BEFORE you even put the baby in/on the prop. This way you can make sure that a baby in a bucket doesn't get carelessly overturned and a spotter can focus on newborn safety without the distraction of a sibling in the shot. See below for some examples.

More great tips:

  • Use a swaddle/wrap to secure the newborn
  • Lay newborn and sibling on their backs next to each other
  • When attempting composite images, place a toy in the prop so the siblings will look at it
  • Holding the baby is not the only option, lay the baby on bed/carpet/prop and then have toddler lean over the newborn to kiss/hug the baby (with parent nearby, of course)

I hope this post was helpful to you! ALWAYS REMEMBER WHEN PHOTOGRAPHING NEWBORNS: SAFETY FIRST!

ACHIEVE | Tulsa Photography Workshop

Yes, you read that title right! Due to such high demand, TG Photography and Madison Vining Photography are offering another workshop! After we launched the ADVANCE Workshop geared towards professionals, we were bombarded with inquiries about a course for beginners. And when the fans ask, we deliver.

If you’ve pondered such questions as…
-How do I get tack sharp photos?
-How do I get the background to be pretty and blurry?
-What are “f stops”?
-How do I achieve ‘sparkly eyes’ in my subjects?
-When should I use flash? (Spoiler alert… the answer is never, and especially not the one that is attached to the top of your camera! Did that stress you out? No worries — we will teach you a MUCH better way of taking photos in all circumstances without resorting to flash, I promise ; )
If you’ve wondered any of these things, this is the workshop for you. And who better to learn your camera from than two industry pros with a passion for teaching others!

So without further ado, we would like to introduce ACHIEVE, a photography workshop for beginners.

This is not your typical photography workshop. If you know me and Madison, we like to do it up in style ;)

Come join us at the fabulous barn location pictured below and learn how to use that "fancy schmancy" camera to it's full extent.

After enjoying some yummy hor d'oeuvres, we're going to dive right in to teaching you everything there is to know about shooting in manual mode, working with light, and capturing the sweet moments of everyday life with your family.

Then it's time for you to practice what you've learned with some field shooting. We will spend time with each one of you to ensure you are comfortable with manipulating your camera settings to achieve the look you want.

And that's not all! No workshop would be complete without a live session with models. You'll get a hands on demonstration on how to put your new skills to good use.

A brief Q&A period at the end will wrap everything up and you will be on your way home and more eager than ever to snap some awesome shots of your loved ones.

In case you think that you will be going home empty handed...think again! Each attendee will leave with a swag bag full of photography goodies, Madison's Clickin' It Workbook (a $99 value!), and a full set of Photojojo Phone Lenses! These lenses are perfect for capturing fun, creative shots without having to lug your big DSLR camera around to every family outing.

Requirements to participate: A DSLR camera and 50mm lens.

Tuition for the workshop is $400 and registration is now open. If you are ready to ACHIEVE, Click her to sign up today!

Are you ready to ADVANCE?

A work in progress...

So many changes have been happening at TG Photography this year, and I'm just now getting a chance to blog about it! I moved into my new studio building in late January/early February, and the last few months have been full of painting, remodeling, and decorating projects. And all this in between my 4-5 sessions a week! Although I still have many projects in mind, I've decided its time to post some pictures! Here are the things still left on my to-do list:

1) update the light fixtures (I found some at Ikea that I LOVE, but I need to drive to Dallas to get them! Who wants to go on a road trip?!)

2) paint and decorate dressing room (this room is not even pictured in the photos below because it is a messy, gigantic prop closet at the moment)3) paint the bathroom (still deciding on a color, maybe gray and white??)4) cover the brown bar in white ceramic tile (I found some at Home Depot that I love (pictured here). I just need to watch some YouTube videos and figure out how to cover it!)
And I'm sure I will keep adding to this list. Well, I'll make this short and get straight to the photos!

Behind the Scenes at Tg Photography

I've been told multiple times that I'm great with kids. Everyone is so amazed at how I get them to sit still for the camera and pose.  Well, I'm going to let you in on a little secret:
I'M NOT THAT GREAT!

You have all heard the saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words." Well to me, they are worth a million words! That's because I know what really went on during the snapping of that image ;)

Take this photo for example:

What words come to mind when you look at it? "What an adorable picture-perfect family!" Right? Ha, wroooong! Let me tell you what words come to my mind:  cute, yet busy, toddler boy, dogs all over the place, older child making funny faces, parents trying to maintain composure, AND temperatures outside equal to a billion degrees. This isn't the only family photo session that fits that description though. Another secret I'll let you in on: I've NEVER taken a "perfect" family portrait. (I know you all are just gasping in disbelief) Well, it's the trufus rufus. (<-translation "it's the truth"....give me a break, it's late at night and I feel like being cheesy) You may think it sounds hectic, but I live for these fun and crazy moments and I love every bit of my job. I mean, what's the point of showing up to work if you don't get to have fun and LOVE what you do, and also have the opportunity to be challenged in a different way everyday.

So with all that said, let me introduce you to my little friend....Photoshop. Now I'm going to SHOW you what I'm talking about...

Beware, you are about to go behind the scenes of TG Photography. You are about to see fully unedited photos, viewer discretion is advised ;)

Here are the ACTUAL photos from that session. The middle one, of course, is the edited image:

Let's play a little game: Can you pick out which faces I used from each photo to create the one in the center?

Sorry, I know they are kinda small. Here, let me help you:

Earlier I mentioned how I live for these moments...I especially live for the moment that I get to show the client the final edited creation and they fall in LOVE with their "picture-perfect portrait" :)

"I'm a big kid now!!!"

As many of you already know, I have a gorgeous 3 year old daughter, Averie. I'm sure you've seen about a gazillion pictures of her on my blog, facebook, etc. Well, she may look sweet and innocent in the photos, but don't let her fool you... Averie is the most stubborn, strong-willed child on the face of the earth! Don't get me wrong, I know stubborn kids grow up to have strong leadership qualities and become very independent adults, but for now, it is a bit inconvenient for Mommy!!  After a few failed attempts, I decided that it was finally time to start potty training again. ALL of her friends are potty trained and I'm pretty sure she is the LAST one who is still wearing diapers...embarrassing, I know. So after candy prizes didn't work, big girl panties didn't work, and the Pull-ups Iphone App didn't even work (I know, shocking), it was time to get serious....

Let me introduce you to Cinderella

she was purchased about a week ago and has been sitting in the window next to the toilet. She "watches" when Averie sits on the potty and waits to see if she is going to pee pee like a big girl. If we have a pee pee in the potty, Cinderella will allow Averie to open her out of the package and play with her! Cinderella also went on vacation with us, but we were so busy and had no luck with potty training. I thought that maybe some big girl pull-ups might help speed up the process, and look who just so happened to be on the pull-ups

CINDERELLA!!!!

As soon as we got home, Averie put on the first princess pull-up and IMMEDIATELY wanted to sit on the potty in fear that she might go pee pee on her precious Cinderella "diaper". I'll let you  guess if she went pee pee or not....

Praying for Joplin

On Sunday, May 23, a tornado tore through Joplin killing and injuring many in its path. Multiple homes and businesses were completely destroyed. Earlier this week my husband and I had the opportunity to go to Joplin with a group from our church to help with tornado recovery efforts. We weren't sure what we would do there or what we might see, but we both felt the urge to help these people that have been affected by such a disaster and show them God's love. When we arrived we were sent to an address to assist a family in putting a tarp over their roof and clearing out trees that had fallen on and around their house. The devastation was unimaginable. I took my camera with me to document a bit of our trip. Below are some shots  I was able to snap in between carrying tree branches and debris to the curb.

There is still much help needed. The distributions centers in Joplin have been overwhelmed with supplies and now the only donations that are being accepted are financial support. From now until the end of the month, for every $50 TG Photography gift certificate purchased, $25 will be donated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. These certificates can be used towards sessions already booked and there are no limitations on who can use them. Must be paid for through Paypal and you will receive a receipt with proof of donation. Contact trisha.jimenez@yahoo.com to purchase a certificate.
